The GROW model was developed in the late 1980s by Sir John Whitmore and his colleagues, Alan Fine and Graham Alexander.
The GROW mentoring model is a popular framework used in mentoring relationships to facilitate goal setting and problem-solving. It provides a structured approach for mentors to guide mentees through the process of identifying goals, exploring options, and developing action plans to achieve desired outcomes. Let’s dive into the details of this model.
The GROW mentoring model provides a structured approach for mentors to guide mentees through the process of identifying goals, exploring options, and developing action plans to achieve desired outcomes.
1. Goals (G)
In the first stage, mentors help mentees identify their current situation and clarify their goals using the SMART format. They explore the mentee’s aspirations and desired outcomes.
2. Reality (R)
Next, mentors assist mentees in objectively assessing their current reality, including strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Mentees reflect on past experiences and potential obstacles.
3. Options (O)
In the options stage, mentors encourage mentees to brainstorm ideas and solutions to address their goals. They evaluate the pros and cons of each option, fostering critical thinking and creativity.
4. Will (W)
Finally, mentors help mentees develop a concrete action plan with specific steps and deadlines. They work on building motivation and commitment, ensuring alignment with the mentee’s capabilities and resources.
The Mentor’s Role
Throughout the mentoring process, mentors serve as guides, providing support, encouragement, and feedback to help mentees navigate each stage of the GROW model.
By following the GROW mentoring model, mentors can empower mentees to take ownership of their development, set meaningful goals, and achieve success in their personal and professional lives.
